Lastly, we were able to complete example #5 from our 2.2 Notes. We will complete 2.2 tomorrow.
HW: Continue to work on book 2.2 (or webassign day 2)

Today we looked at 83 - 88 from section 2.1 to review differentiability. We also took any remaining questions from 2.1 (39 - 42, 45, 54). Then students had 20 minutes to complete the Quiz 2.1.
Lastly, we were able to complete example #5 from our 2.2 Notes. We will complete 2.2 tomorrow. HW: Continue to work on book 2.2 (or webassign day 2) Today we started with a review of 5 limit questions. We went over these in class. We also discuss the chapter 1 test. Then students received a review sheet for section 2.1 and we went over 1 - 4 in class.
HW: Quiz 2.1 is tomorrow and turn in your homework from week 4 : 1.5, chapter 1 review and WS We completed in class the packet on Differentiability and Continuity. We also looked at our past work we did on derivatives and found a pattern that we could apply: the power rule. We completed the first 4 examples of our 2.2 Power Rule notes.
To reviewed what we learned this past week click the links below. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/differential-calculus/taking-derivatives/power_rule_tutorial/v/power-rule http://www.calculus-help.com/the-power-rule/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg3_XgKUzU4 HW: Please complete 2.2 day 1 webassign (or do book 2.2 up through #23). As review we completed a question that asked for the slope of the tangent line at 3 different x-values. So we calculated the derivative using the limit definition of the derivative. Then we were able to use that formula to determine the slope of the tangent line. We checked the reasonableness of our answers by using the draw tangent feature on our graphing calculator.
We also went over the first 4 questions in the Concept of Derivative packet that was handed out on Monday. HW: Complete all of book 2.1 (or webassign) and finish the WS Concept of Derivative packet. You will need to turn in homework from week 4: 1.5, chapter 1 review, & WS 1.1 -1.4 (9 multiple choice questions) We completed our notes on the definition of the derivative and looked at how we could use the limit definition of the derivative to determine the slope of the tangent line. We can check our work graphically.
To see more examples of finding the derivative go the to link below. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wH-g60EJ18&feature=relmfu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzDYOHETFlo HW: Book 2.1 (or webassign) This should be completed by the end of the day tomorrow (9/24), so try to complete through #48 for tonight. Today we played guess the function for 3 different graphs. The graphs all looked linear; however, they were all the same function: y = sin x just zoomed in at 3 different locations. We discovered that there are many functions that are locally linear. We also found that the absolute value function is not locally linear at the origin.
We also watched a short video on the difference quotient. http://www.calculus-help.com/the-difference-quotient/ HW: Read the WS Concept of Derivative and answers the first 2 questions. Today we focused on reviewing key concepts (continuity, one-sided limits, and if a limit exists). We completed 4 questions that involved finding a value to make the function continuous.
HW: Book review for chapter 1 and test tomorrow on chapter 1. All homework from chapter 1 needs to be turned We quickly completed 5 review questions on 1.2 and then went through our notes for 1.5: limits at infinity and asymptotes.

Chapter 1 test is this Friday. Mathletes is meeting tomorrow morning in C215 at 7:00. Please join us. Today we completed 10 review questions at the start of class. We also went over 1-5 from yesterday's worksheet 1.1 - 1.4. Then students had 20 minutes to complete their Quiz 1.3.
HW: Do 8 and 9 on worksheet 1.1 - 1.4 (from yesterday) and turn in homework from week 2 (if you did not do so) and week 3 (book or webassign 1.3, 1.4 and WS Limits Algebraically: 1 column and the back side done) |
