During the first half of class we checked the back side of WS 7.1. We reviewed how to solve by graphing using the TI-Nspire graphing calculators. Students cannot use desmos.com on their assessments, so be comfortable using the graphing calculators.

Students completed a half sheet warm-up on exponential functions. We checked this in class and then played a 12 question Kahoot game that reviewed our work from this past week. We also reviewed solving by graphing. We went over the front side of WS 7.1. Students are to complete the back side tonight.
Lastly, we worked on the first 5 exponential equations where the bases are the same (positive and not = 1) so the exponents must be equal. We also showed how we could rewrite larger bases as powers of smaller bases. We completed the last example (#4 on page 2) in our notes from last week. We checked over the vocab support page in the notes. This gave us the opportunity to review key terms of our exponential function. Then students had about 28 minutes to work on completing the Desmos activity: Match My Exponential. Student also received WS 7.1 and are to complete the front tonight.
HW: WS 7.1 front side only Students used the first 20 minutes of class to complete the Desmos Activity on paper folding (in your google classroom). We saw that the number of fold increased exponentially with a growth factor of 2. We also saw that the area is an example of exponential decay with a decay factor of 1/2.
Then we completed the 3 application problems on page 2 of your notes. Use the video link for review/practice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmoeqRNlgKA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fHNfvt7K_Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEFKE_k9pDk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ngar7ghGGuo HW: Complete the first two slides of Match My Exponential Desmos Activity & complete the Avi & Benita's Repair Shop Desmos Activity if you have done so. We completed the first and third pages of our notes on exponential growth and decay. We used desmos to look at the graph of y = ab^x and were able to see that the "a" was the y-intercept and the b determined if the graph was growth (increase) or decay (decrease). "b"is the growth (or decay) factor.
Then we identified the "a" and "b" values from the given equations and also showed how to determine the rate of growth or decay. The rate is written as a percentage, so the decimal value is multiplied by 100%. If r = 1.4 then r = 140%. If r = 0.07, then r = 7%. (for growth use 1 + r = b and for decay use 1 - r = b) Use the video links below for practice or review. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJsKTTkIjFk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4kuWR92p7M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nxSHt9Ki9A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lj9qNmLRmJ8 HW: Complete WS 7-1 Vocab Support (attached to your notes) & complete the Desmos activity from yesterday: Avi & Benita's Repair Shop Due to class meetings today during 2nd and 3rd hour, students had the class period to complete the short Desmos activity: Avi & Benita's Repair Shop. The code is in your google classroom.
HW: Desmos activity: Avi & Benita's Repair Shop Students completed their last few slides of the Desmos: What Comes Next. We discussed the last 3 slides together. Then we completed the drug filtering chart, which is an application of the ideas discussed yesterday in the desmos activity. Students then plotted the graph of the table and answered questions 3 & 4. Students were also posed with a question: would you rather have...A) $1,000,000 or B) a penny that double every day for a month?
HW: Complete the desmos: what comes next, the drug filtering application and choose A or B. Happy 2020! Starting off the new semester, new year, and new decade with some new seats. We used the class period to look at patterns (using the 4 basic operations of add, subtract, multiply, & divide) from a given graph or table. Students had time to work and then we discussed the first 5 slides together. We looked at how close students were in their predictions and critiqued justifications. We completed nearly the whole activity in class. Students had 2 or 3 slides to complete.
HW: Complete Desmos: What comes next? Retake for test 6 (from 1st semester is due by 1/17/2020). |
