HW: Complete WS 4-2 Test Prep. Our first test will be next Wednesday, September 6th.
We used the first half of class to review graphing a parabola that is in vertex form, writing the equation of the parabola in vertex form given the vertex and a point, and finding the 2 missing coefficients in a standard form quadratic given the vertex. Students had 20 - 25 minutes to complete the quiz 4.1 - 4.2.

Students went to the computer lab where they played a matching game called polygraph. Students had to ask questions in a yes or no format in order to determine which graph (from 16 choices) another student had selected. This practiced vocabulary associated with quadratic functions. We did this for about 15 - 20 minutes and then students worked on Marbleslides. The goal is to create a ramp from a quadratic equation so that the marbles hit all the stars. If you did not finish this activity, log into IC for your class code.
HW: Complete WS 4.2. Quiz 4.1 - 4.2 is tomorrow during the last half of class. Students were given a card and asked to match their equation, vertex, or graph to create their group of 3. Then students took about 15 - 20 minutes to go over their book 4.1 assignment and WS Graphing Parabolas (1 - 11). I visited each group to answer questions.
Students were given Cornell notes on graphing a quadratic in standard form. We completed the first 2 examples in class. It is important to find the vertex using the formula x = -b/(2a) and then subbing in to get the corresponding y-value. The "c" is the y-intercept and we used the axis of symmetry to help generate more points. Tomorrow, please go directly to computer lab D12A. This is near the auditorium. We started by completing WS 4.1 Test Prep. We showed how to use the graphing feature on the TI-Nspire calculators in order to find the vertex of the parabola. Then we used Cornell notes to discuss standard form of a quadratic. We found the vertex by using x = -b/(2a), axis of symmetry, the y-intercept (sub in x =0) and converted the quadratic from standard form into vertex form. We graphed both of these forms and found that the graphs were identical.
Students turned in their WS 4.1 from last Friday. Use the link below for review/practice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1hRxH-kJ6M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sr3Ak1zAs6I HW: Complete book 4.2 page 206 - 208 10, 14 - 16, 26, 29, 30, 32 - 38 even, 45 -47, 56 - 62 even Students worked in groups of 4 to match 12 given graphs with its vertex, axis of symmetry, and equation. Then students worked on WS 4.1 while I checked their work. Then we played Kahoot where students answered 10 questions on vertex form of a quadratic function.
6th hour had time for the exit slip, 2nd hour will do that on Monday. HW: Complete WS 4.1. Use your book section 4.1 for any review or extra practice. Enjoy the weekend! We went to the computer lab today and students completed the Desmos activity called Match My Parabola. Students were able to practice writing the equation of a parabola given 3 points. Students also practiced graphing a parabola that was in vertex form.
HW: Complete 1 - 9 on today's worksheet. Students completed the WS 4.1 Vocab Support as a class warm-up. The 9 vocabulary terms are important to know. You can use the sheet for review. Then we reviewed the conclusions about the effect of "a" on the parabola y = x^2. We completed Part A and 2 or 3 problems from Part B. Students also completed a 6 question exit slip.
HW: Students are to complete the graphs from Part B. You can check your graphs with a graphing calculator or desmos.com . Tomorrow, please go to computer lab D12A, which is near the auditorium. We examined the transformations that occurred with the new function compared to the parent of y = x^2, looking at the effects of a, h and k on our parabola. We talked about the domain and range of the function. We completed 1 - 15 together on our notes packet.
Then we used https://www.desmos.com/calculator to verify the vertex and graphs we made. Use the link for review/practice https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/quadratics/solving_graphing_quadratics/v/graphing-a-parabola-in-vertex-form https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y99lNRqLjBA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpTvNFXvj38 (just first 8 minutes) HW: Students are to complete 1 - 15 on the notes packet. Students examined the graphs of total solar eclipse paths that covered the continental US for the past 500 years. Using given coordinates, they plotted cities and found which year(s) they encountered a solar eclipse. Students can use the links below to complete the activity.

We reviewed the classroom expectations. Then we played a game where students were given a slogan and ask to identify the company. The slogans selected could be used for our classroom or the school year. The last half of class students completed the Knowledge Search activity. Each student had the opportunity to meet peers and answer fun facts about school, math, and other random facts.
Enjoy the weekend! |
