Students completed the WS 8.6 Test Prep in class and we checked over these 8 problems. Then we went over common errors on Quiz 8.1 - 8.3. Students had the last 12 minutes to complete the 4 question exit slip on solving rational equations.
Today, an additional 2 practice sets have been made available on www.tenmarks.com to help students prepare for tomorrow's test. Students have been given usernames and passwords. Students only need to complete areas where they feel they need extra practice. Test (8.1 - 8.3 & 8.6) is tomorrow, 3/24. We spent time going over 9 rational equations from yesterday's homework. Then students had 12 minutes to complete their quiz 8.1 - 8.3 from yesterday.
HW: Book 8.6 (listed on the 8.6 notes packet) Students were given 12 minutes to complete the matching activity they started yesterday. Then we went over 24 - 27 on WS 8.3 Practice. We also went over the steps that can be taken to solve an equation that has rational functions. We could graph and look for the intersection point(s) or get the equation equal to zero and look for the x-intercept(s) as the solution.
Algebraically, we used the cross product property to solve our proportions. If our rational equation was not in the form of a proportion, we looked for common denominators or created common denominators to quickly make a proportion. Students can check their answers using the "store" feature on the graphing calculator to make checking easier. We completed 3 examples together. HW: Complete the attached 8.6 worksheet (1 - 10) We checked through WS 8.3 1 - 12 at the beginning of class, which allowed us to review how to classify a discontinuity as a hole in the graph (removable) or a vertical asymptote (non-removable).
Then we looked at the 3 different cases of degree in a rational function and how we use those cases to identify any horizontal asymptotes. During the last 12 minutes students were given 12 rational functions and 12 graphs to match up. We will finish this tomorrow at the start of class. Do not graph 24 - 26, name any discontinuities and horizontal asymptotes. Quiz 8.1 - 8.3 is tomorrow. Students matched up 9 vocabulary terms with their description. We looked into two types of discontinuities: removable (hole in the graph) and non-removable (vertical asymptote). We went over the steps to determine the location and type of discontinuity in the rational function. We used desmos to verify our work on 1 - 3.

Students go to www.student.desmos.com and enter the CODE:YYXA. Students had the class to complete the 11 question summative assessment on log properties & equations.
Afterwards, students could finish their TI-Nspire lab from yesterday. HW: WS 8.2 Test Prep We started by students completing WS 8.1 Test Prep and we checked this in class. Then students had the last 30 minutes of class to complete the TI-Nspire Activity Graphing Rational Functions.
HW: Summative Assessment over 7.3 - 7.6 is tomorrow, 3/15 (log properties and log equations, like those in the post-test d - g) We discussed the difference between inverse variation (xy = k) and direct variation (y/x = k or y = kx). We also used demos to look at the graph of an inverse variation. We noted the graph was not connected and in only 2 of the 4 quadrants. The graph of a direct variation is a line going through the origin.
