After completing our warm-up problem (half got it right) and working through errors, we went to the computer lab and started our powerpoint project on Where in the World is Geometry.
Our first quiz will be next Wednesday, September 3rd. HW: Please make your revisions and turn your worksheet back in. We started with solving a linear equation. We went over errors and the solution. Students had about 15 minutes to complete making their geometric model (from yesterday). Also, the Worksheet on Points, Lines, & Planes was handed back to students.
Students received information on their first project: where in the world is geometry? We went through the expectations and 2 samples of work. Tonight, gather photos or think of what images you would like to search for. HW: Turn in Worksheet on Points, Lines, & Planes or make the requested revisions. We started class by solving an equation. We showed a student's work and also how to arrive at the correct solution. Then we classified 9 items as lines, rays, or segments. We went over questions with yesterday's homework and it was collected.
The last 20 minutes of class students worked in pairs to build a geometric model using the vocabulary we learned. Students need to complete the first 8 tasks and get them approved by the teacher before building the model. HW: Complete the worksheet if you did not do so. Need help with solving equations? Use the links below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmMX3-nTWbE https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/solving-linear-equations-and-inequalities http://www.regentsprep.org/regents/math/algebra/ae2/lsolveq.htm We started class by solving an equation. This is one of our goals this week. Then we did a review of some of the vocabulary and notation from yesterday. Then students completed an exit slip by writing out at least 5 sentences.
Period 2: please sign (student and parent signatures) and return the Title 1 Compact you received. HW: Complete the back of yesterday's worksheet We started with an algebraic equation to solve. We found that students need to improve this skill and that is one of our goals this week. We discussed how to solve the problem and some common errors.
Next students received back their pre-assessment of unit 1. We completed the notes sheet for geometric vocabulary. HW: Students are to complete the front side of the worksheet and complete their first TenMarks assignment on www.TenMarks.com Students received their books today. They also received a username and password for www.tenmarks.com . Students need to complete their first TenMarks assignment by the end of the day Monday, August 25th.
I am proud to say that both classes found a solution to the jug problem. :) Students turned in their pre-assessment from yesterday and then used the rest of class to complete the Knowledge Search Worksheet (please ask other stude HW: Knowledge Search Worksheet & TenMarks online assignment. Students received the course syllabus. We went over it in class. Students then had 20 minutes to complete the pre-assessment for the first unit. You will need to turn this in tomorrow.
We completed our PBIS activity (2nd hour: observation & interpretation; 3rd hour: unity), which took most of the class time. 3rd hour also examined
We asked for any student to demonstrate a solution to the 5 & 3 gallon jug problem (how to get 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug). No one demonstrated this yet. Work on this tonight. Class meetings ran 2nd & 3rd hour; we completed our PBIS tasks (Bathroom expectations and classroom expectations) and looked at slogans by various companies that applied to learning mathematics. Students were challenged to think of their slogan for he 2014 - 15 school year.
We also acted out the counterfeit money problem from yesterday. Tonight's homework: how do you fill a 5 gallon jug with exactly 4 gallons of water given only 2 containers. We completed the given PBIS activities for each class (draw a bug and learning styles inventory). We also went over class expectations, a quick get to you know activity, and the counterfeit problem.
